Rotary cleaning up Huntsville Sunday, needs volunteers

Huntsville’s three rotary clubs are asking the community to help clean up the town.

On Sunday, the Rotary Clubs of Huntsville, North Muskoka, and People of Action Huntsville will lead volunteers in picking up roadside garbage, starting 10:00 a.m. from Huntsville High School.

People of Action President Jennifer Jerrett says they’re inviting the whole community to help out.

“We’re looking for hundreds,” jokes Jerrett. “We welcome all community members to come out. The more people, the merrier. Last year we probably had around 30 people, which was amazing, and we just want to grow this year over year.”

According to Jerrett, volunteers will get a cleanup kit with bags and gloves before being taken to a “trouble area” suggested by residents. She says some of the big ones include highway ramps, the Williamsport area, and Ravenscliffe Road.

“We’ve got a list from the community of trouble areas, so those teams will go out to those areas to pick up litter,” says Jerrett. “It’s typically areas along roadways, intersections, where people might be tossing stuff out their car windows or whatnot.”

Jerrett says they’ll meet back at the high school around noon, where town crews will pick up and dispose of the garbage.

“Going out in the community and trying to make a difference, trying to beautify it, cleaning up stuff that’s been left over from the winter,” says Jerrett. “Just really making the environment great for ourselves, for nature, for animals, and of course the people who visit our community as well.”

She suggests wearing boots, preferably steel toed, to protect against sharp objects, as well as long pants to keep ticks away. “Just dress appropriately. We will be going out if it’s drizzling rain, so wear your raincoat. Garbage can be picked in the sun or the rain, so it’s a go.”

You can contact the club on Facebook or by emailing [email protected] to volunteer or suggest cleanup locations.
