The OPP is warning about “grandparent scams,” after a Muskoka Lakes senior lost $8,800.
Police say on Oct. 19, the resident was contacted by a stranger who claimed to be a loved one and urgently asked for money. They say several other people contacted the Huntsville and Bracebridge detachments the same day to report similar calls.
If you get a panicked call from someone claiming to be a loved one who is asking for money on short notice, officials say to hang up and call a trusted person to verify the situation.
To report a potential scam, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
