Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) has been honoured by Ontario Health for its “outstanding contribution to organ and tissue donation in Ontario.”
The two awards are the Hospital Achievement Awards for Provincial Conversion Rate and Provincial Eligible Approach Rate. MAHC was judged for the work they did between April 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023.
The former award was given to MAHC for hitting a 100 percent conversion rate, which is above Ontario Health’s 63 percent target.
Officials explain the number signifies the percentage of suitable organ donors that went on to become actual donors.
The latter award was given to MAHC for “exceeding the eligible approach rate target of 90 percent set by Ontario Health.”
Officials explain the award is given to hospitals that lead the way in organ donation practices with families and patients at the end of their lives. Officials say MAHC got an eligible approach rate of 100 percent.
MAHC won both awards for the first time.
Cheryl Harrison, President and CEO of MAHC, says the awards are thanks to the tireless work of staff at the Huntsville District Memorial Hospital and South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge.
“I am extremely proud of the outstanding commitment our team has shown in championing organ and tissue donation,” she says. “These awards reflect the compassion, dedication, and teamwork that define our approach. Congratulations and thank you to everyone who played a part in achieving these results.”
Harrison promotes the section on MAHC’s website dedicated to becoming an organ or tissue donor.
Rebecca Cooper, Vice President of the Ontario Renal Network and Trillium Gift of Life Network, says Ontario Health is proud to continue its partnership with MAHC.
“By ensuring that the wishes of donors are realized, we honour their selflessness and the legacy they intend to leave behind. Every Ontarian has the potential to save or significantly enhance a life one day by registering at BeADonor.ca and speaking to their family about their donation decision.”
