A 24-year-old from Pierrefonds, Que. has been charged after police spotted him near the Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst.
Provincial Const. Samantha Bigley says around 9:20 p.m. on Jan. 11, police were called by prison officials about the package, which had been found near the facility.
After patrolling the area, Bigley says officers found a vehicle “parked in an unexpected area nearby.”
In a separate media release, Mike Shrider, regional communications manager with Correctional Service Canada (CSC), says the items seized have been valued at $58,000 and include tobacco, cannabis, rolling papers, and cell phone accessories.
Bigley says the man has been charged with possession of a schedule two substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime, possession of contraband beyond the visitor control point in a penitentiary, and failing to comply with a probation officer.
A court date has been scheduled for Feb. 27 in Bracebridge.
