The death of Mark Smellie is being investigated by the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario.
Provincial officials say the 54-year-old died in hospital on March 15, 2019, stemming from an incident on March 4 while in custody at the OPP detachment in Burk’s Falls.

An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.
