Muskoka’s hospitals to better support youth thanks to provincial funding

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) is getting $11,600 from the province.

Provincial officials say the money must be used to “enhance support for children and youth at Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare after receiving surgery, including providing pediatric mental health training for staff.”

Cheryl Harrison, president and chief executive officer for MAHC, says the funding helps them provide better care at the hospitals in Bracebridge and Huntsville.

“Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare is thankful for this funding, which supports our goal of keeping pediatric surgeries closer to home while helping us manage the post-pandemic pediatric surgical backlog,” she says. “Additionally, the investment in staff education, guided by SickKids, reinforces our commitment to a well-rounded and patient-centered care approach in the Muskoka region.”

One Kids Place Children’s Treatment Centre in North Bay is getting $1.05 million while the North Bay Regional Health Centre is receiving $72,900.

The money is coming as part of Ontario’s $1.1 million investment in pediatric access for youth,

Sylvia Jones, deputy premier and minister of health, says the additional funding is part of the provincial government’s additional $330 million to support pediatric health services at hospitals and community-based healthcare facilities.

“The pediatric funding provided to services in North Bay and Muskoka will have a tremendous impact on children and their families, ensuring they receive faster access to care when they need it,” she says.
