SIU clears Bracebridge OPP in self-inflicted injury case

Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared Bracebridge OPP of wrongdoing in a 2023 injury case.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), on Sept. 30, 2023, the man jumped from a moving vehicle while he was being driven to the hospital.

SIU Director Joseph Martino says he was of unsound mind and wished to end his life, adding he went to a residence in Bracebridge and cut himself with knives.

He says Ontario Provincial Police officers arrived on scene and took him into custody under the Mental Health Act, before bringing him to hospital.

“On this record, it was apparent the police did nothing to cause his injury, leaving patently nothing to investigate as far as potential criminal liability,” says Martino. “The file has been closed.”
