Bracebridge Memorial Arena being removed for good in April

One last skate will be held at the Bracebridge Memorial Arena on Saturday, March 30 ahead of it being torn down.

Town officials say the free public skate, which will be hosted by Mayor Rick Maloney, will be from 10 a.m. until noon and again from 1 to 3 p.m.

There will be hot chocolate served in the auditorium.

Officials say the arena’s ice will be removed for the final time on April 2.

The decommissioning of the area, which was built in 1949, was awarded to Aquicon Construction Ltd. as part of their contract to undertake the work on the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre (MLCC).

A timeline for when the arena will be decommissioned has not been detailed.

A petition was recently circulated by Chris Ledsham, a director with the South Muskoka Minor Hockey Association, asking the town to not tear down the old barn.

Maloney told the MyMuskokaNow.com newsroom the costs associated with keeping it open are too high, adding the building is already in rough shape.

Part of the MLCC will be the Muskoka Lumber Arena, which will be home to the Muskoka Bears junior C team and the Norstar Exteriors Sports Hall of Fame.
