Gravenhurst council awards bursary to graduating high schooler

Grace Montross is $2,000 richer thanks to the Gravenhurst High School Bursary Award.

“I’m just saving up money for school and hanging out with friends,” she said during the July 16 council meeting.

Montross says she has worked at Granite Ridge Retirement Residence in Gravenhurst as a dietary aid. She is preparing to move to Sudbury, Ont., where she will start a four-year nursing program at Laurentian University.

“I’m very excited,” she added.

Gravenhurst’s Mayor Heidi Lorenz congratulated her during the town’s July 16 council meeting. She said there were plenty of applicants this year, but Montross’ stood above the rest.

This year, applicants were asked to write a 500-to-750-word essay detailing the best ways Gravenhurst could enhance recreation and cultural opportunities for young people.

“We hope you get to come back and work in our community,” said Lorenz. She added how she’s always excited to present the bursary and hear what the recipient is planning to do after graduating high school.

The application process for the bursary runs from March 1 to May 31 every year.
