Local students awarded over $10,000 in educational grants by Lakeland

Five local students received educational awards totaling over $10,000 from Lakeland Networks and Lakeland Generation.

Jennifer Hurlbut, Director of Communications at Lakeland Holding Ltd., said students from the Muskoka, Parry Sound, and Almaguin school districts were awarded for their academic prowess and hard work.

According to Hurlbut, Lakeland Networks provides four $1500 bursaries annually to assist graduating high school students in pursuing post-secondary education.

This year’s winners are:

  • Aidan Fitzmaurice, who will be studying Political Science
  • Zach Caplan, who will be studying Environmental Science
  • Kianna Bailey, who will be studying Honours Health Sciences
  • Alex Stewart, who will be Video Game Design and Development

Hurlbut said the new B. Ingram Excellence Award was created in remembrance of Lakeland’s Manager of Operations, Bryan Ingram, and continues his legacy by supporting the next generation of young professionals and leaders within our local communities.

The award was given to Ethan Aitken who will be studying Integrated Engineering.

“The B. Ingram Excellence Award of $5000 is given to a student who is entering into post-secondary education in Hydro Mechanics, Mechatronics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or a similar program) with the goal of pursuing a career in the renewable energy field,” added Hurlbut.

Officials say Ethan Aitken personally knew Bryan and was encouraged by him to pursue engineering. Bryan’s ongoing involvement in the Muskoka community led them to meet over Bryan’s many years of coaching and volunteering in the South Muskoka Minor Hockey Association.
