Kent Park is now able host events with alcohol after council approved to update the Municipal Alcohol Policy (MAP).
During the July 24 general committee meeting, Greg Pilling, manager of facility operations, sales, and customer service, presented a report to council outlining a small change to the Town’s Municipal Alcohol Policy.
The current Municipal Alcohol Policy was adopted by council in 2017.
The report highlights since that time, there have been changes to town facilities.
Pilling said the old policy was established when there was a kiosk and four parking spots in Kent Park. He added the BIA requested to host an event with alcohol in Kent Park in June 2024 but due to the Municipal Alcohol Policy (MAP), the request was denied.
“It’s obviously more suitable for events now,” said Pilling. “Just wanted to clean up the MAP to ensure we can support the bar and other events in that area.”
The report mentions some risk management implications due to Kent Park being a small area located on a busy intersection in Downtown Huntsville.
“Staff will need to ensure public safety, and any recommendations from the Special Event Advisory Team have been properly addressed when reviewing and approving applications to sell and consume alcohol at this location,” reads the report.
As requested by Pilling and noted in the report, council also approved to remove the Waterloo Summit Centre for the Environment from the MAP and add any other location deemed appropriate by the Director of Community Services, with the approval of the Special Event Advisory Team (SEAT) and the Parks Manager.
