Muskoka to seek public input with the launch of the Solid Waste Master Plan

The District of Muskoka wants your input on how to help shape the future of waste management.

The district has launched a Solid Waste Master Plan (SWMP) to plan for the next 30 years.

The District launched an online survey this week to gather public opinions on streamlining waste management processes and setting future priorities.

They say the goal is to become more sustainable in response to recent trends, rising costs and environmental impacts.

The district says the SWMP builds on the Waste Strategy compelted in 2021, and aligns with the District’s Energy and Emissions Reduction Plan, prioritizing waste reduction as a key community initiative.

“By 2030, Muskoka aims to reduce garbage generation by 10 per cent and divert 60 per cent of all solid waste from landfills,” add officials. “These targets will increase to 25 per cent garbage reduction and 80 per cent waste diversion by 2050.”

According to officials, the SWMP will explore comprehensive waste management options to meet the growing needs of Muskoka’s community and adapt to the fast-changing waste management landscape.

“By focusing on sustainability, social responsibility, and economic viability, the SWMP seeks to address future waste challenges while protecting Muskoka’s natural beauty and resources,” say officials.
