Muskoka 100 People Who Care awarded $7,260 to Food4Kids Muskoka during their second meeting.
The meeting was at Turtle Jacks in Port Carling on Aug. 28.
Marion Mochrie, one of the founders of Muskoka 100 People Who Care, says it was a “emotional night” finding out about all that is needed in the community.
“We just feel that we want to give back to our community,” says Mochrie.
Three charities attended the meeting: Food4Kids, Mind Aid and The Shoebox Project of Muskoka.
“They all speak for about five to ten minutes to all the people that have come. And then at the end of their speeches, everyone votes on which one they feel is the one they would like to see the funds go to,” says Mochrie.
She says Food4Kids had the most votes, adding all the charities that were at the meeting are in great need.
Food4Kids Muskoka’s program Weekends Without Hunger sees packed bags of food delivered to school staff on Fridays, which are then put into students’ bags to take home for the weekend.
Mochrie explains the idea behind Muskoka 100 People Who Care is to get 100 people to donate $100 each, with a charity then being presented with the money. 51 people attended August’s event.
She says she hopes in future meetings they can get more people involved to make a greater impact on the community.
