Muskoka seniors advocate for climate action

Muskoka seniors and friends will soon be gathering to discuss Earth’s needs for a better future.

The “Later is Too Late, so Let’s Get Started Now!” event will be held at River Mill Park on Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s going to be hosted by Climate Action Muskoka (CAM), and is in celebration of Canada’s first-ever National Seniors Day for Climate.

Madelaine Earl, CAM member, says they are coming together to show the power of collective action.

“We’re one of the biggest voting blocks in Canada, and we want to remind seniors that we have a lot of power to push the government to move in the right direction. We’re looking to leave the legacy of a beautiful planet, not a planet that’s burning and flooding,” says Earl.

Sue McKenzie, another CAM member, says climate heating caused by burning fossil fuels is the “defining issue.”

“There are healthy and beneficial solutions which need to be implemented immediately so that our kids and grandkids inherit a better world. To put the future into perspective, kids born today will live to see the 22nd century,” says McKenzie.

According to officials, the event will see Muskoka seniors and others come together to talk, listen and share hopes and concerns.

“We are sending a message to all levels of government and to all political parties to act now to phase out the burning of fossil fuels and to speed up the transition to renewable power and clean energy,” say officials.
