Fire prevention on display at the Summit Center

The Town of Huntsville, the Huntsville Otters, and the fire department teamed up for a unique safety message during fire prevention week.

“Working smoke/CO alarms save lives” is the message that has been painted on the Summit Center ice rink, along with a reminder to test monthly.

Steve Markham, public education and fire prevention officer with the Huntsville Lake Bays Fire Department, says they want to have that reminder for residents when they’re watching or skating.

“You just see so many families that are congregating there and just enjoying watching their family members on the ice and in the water,” says Markham.

Markham adds the Otters paid for the template, and town staff painted the message on the ice.

“It’s going to be on there for quite some time because they don’t switch out the ice very often now that the ice stays in year-round,” shares Markham.

Markham says everyone should test their smoke alarms monthly and adds they provide “judgment free home assessments”.

“We do have alarms that have been donated to the department that we can get installed into homes for people that either don’t have the financial means to be able to put them up or maybe they’re not physically able,” adds Markham.
