Federal government investing in Muskoka North Good Food Co-op

The federal government is investing $535,000 to help Muskoka North Good Food Co-op purchase new equipment and expand to meet demand.

The announcement was made today (Oct.16) by Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services.

Officials say the investment is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program and will allow the organization to acquire a second modular farm pod, purchase and install a walk-in cooler and freezer, and establish a micro-bakery, all while creating five full-time jobs.

They add once complete, this priority project will help ensure local families have improved access to safe, reliable, fresh and nutritious foods.

Kelli Ebbs, Manager at Muskoka North Good Food Co-op, says the opening of their newly expanded space will celebrate their 7th anniversary, co-operative dedication, regional food systems growth and more.

“Supporting our region’s farm and agri-food producers continues to make it easier for people to access fresh, nutritious foods while building a strong and sustainable agri-food sector in Muskoka,” says Ebbs.

Officials say the Co-op, based in Huntsville, connects local farmers to a growing consumer base through a grocery retail market, commercial production kitchen and more.
