Surveillance cameras will be installed in Huntsville’s River Mill Park to the tune of nearly $7,000.
Huntsville council approved the additional funding during the Oct. 28 council meeting after staff presented council reports of vandalism in the community.
According to staff, the Information Technology Capital Budget for 2024 includes $70,000 for the replacement of the Town’s current video surveillance system. Staff says even with the new addition, they will still be on budget.
The report states the vandalism in River Mill Park places additional strains on the Town’s budget and resources.
“The installation of a video surveillance system is anticipated to cost approximately $5,900 with an additional $1000 for signage,” reads the report.
Council also voted in a closed session for the town to continue reviewing video surveillance requirements for any additional municipal properties according to the Town’s Video Surveillance Policy.
Video surveillance is also used at the Canada Summit Centre, Huntsville Civic Centre, Muskoka Heritage Place and more.
As per town policy, when a new or additional Video Surveillance System is being considered for an open space like the park, the Town has to provide an opportunity for public consultation. That public meeting will be scheduled soon.
