Michelle Courtnage lost her daughter Katie to a snowmobile accident in 2018. Since then, she’s partnered with the Manna Food Bank in her honour to host Plate for Hunger, helping those who are hungry.
“My daughter had a mountain of friends,” remembers Courtnage. “And it was always a revolving door at my house. We always had food for everybody. And this is something we do in her memory. Everybody needs to eat.”
The event takes place at Nick’s Restaurant this Saturday, Nov. 2. but the first event was held right in her own kitchen.
Courtnage says about 30 friends and family showed up, and they held a spaghetti dinner to say thank you.
The next year, it was held at Nick’s Restaurant and has been hosted there since.
“They have been a part of my family for 20 years,” says Courtnage. “My daughter worked there through high school. Our sons are good friends. So, in 2019, we provided dinner if they brought a donation to the food bank. We doubled our donation that year, with 300 lbs of food and a $1,000 donated.”
Courtnage says they started up again last year after the pandemic, with the event seeing two pick-up trucks filled with food being donated.
“$15 gets you a plate. you can come in, get some food, enjoy a great meal, and support the community,” says Courtnage.
Courtnage adds spaghetti and alfredo are on the menu and the money will be given to the food bank along with donations that are dropped off.
