The Muskoka Community Foundation has created a new fund to address local food insecurity and support operational and infrastructure needs of local organizations.
According to officials, the Feed Muskoka Fund will support Muskoka’s ten local food banks as well as multiple food insecurity programs that operate across Muskoka.
Officials say the fund will support by:
- Reducing food costs by addressing gaps in infrastructure that impact bulk ordering purchases.
- Strengthening organizational capacity to improve services.
- Promoting local food production and the processing of food rescue items.
- Creating educational opportunities for skills development and training opportunities for service users.
Lynn DeCaro, Executive Director of the Foundation, says it is designed to “empower the organizations that are doing this critical work.”
“If we are going to tackle food insecurity in our Muskoka communities, we need solutions that bridge the gaps in our current system,” says DeCaro. “The focus of this fund is about more than filling plates – it is about finding sustainable ways to address the real problems our communities are facing.”
Windermere Golf and Country Club kicked off the Feed Muskoka Fund with a $15,000 donation raised through their 1st Annual Turkey Shoot Classic on Saturday, Oct 5, which, according to officials, 66 members and guests raise funds through a silent and live auction.
Mike Campol, General Manager of Windermere Golf and Country Club, says they appreciate the work that Muskoka Community Foundation does to support local food banks in the region.
“We are honored to play a part in this important initiative,” says Campol.
