United Way funding helping to Get Ahead Across Muskoka

Funding from United Way Simcoe Muskoka has already enabled YWCA to create new jobs and a new group and strengthen partnerships with various agencies.

That’s according to Justin Richardson.

He’s the Getting Ahead Coordinator at YWCA. Richardson, along with other staff and United Way representatives, were at Salvation Army Church in Bracebridge for a public recognition event earlier today (Nov. 8) to acknowledge the 3-year funding of Getting Ahead Across Muskoka.

Officials say the $315,151 grant will help women and rural residents in need across Muskoka.

Richardson says the program emphasizes reducing poverty in the region.

“As a nonprofit, a huge part of what we do is trying to procure funding for all the different programs that we run. To have a partner like the United Way Simcoe-Muskoka and to have grant funding over three years brings a lot of stability within the program,” says Richardson.

Hannah Lin, Executive Director of YWCA Muskoka, says this opportunity will “greatly enhance” their ability to provide quality services across the region.

Sharon McCormick, chief administrative officer with United Way Simcoe Muskoka, says the grant is, in part, to recognize the experience the YWCA has in creating a strong community impact and being able to innovate and find new ways that continuously meet the needs and demands of their community.

According to officials, through this grant, YWCA Muskoka has already been able to revise the curriculum, ensuring it is relevant for youth and women and the groups that have started this fall in Dwight at the Public Library at Trinity United Church in partnership with Gravenhurst Against Poverty and in partnership with Elizabeth Fry Society at Alex’s Place.
