Dr. William S. Monk Fund helps keep doctor’s offices open in Downtown

A $5,000 grant from the Dr. William S. Monk Community Health Care Development Fund will help to keep downtown Huntsville’s physician offices open.

Morrison shared at the Nov. 25 Huntsville council meeting that some downtown doctor offices had become vacant due to doctor retirements.

Morrison said he discussed using Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) funds to lease the property, but he said it would take too long.

He said the landlord wanted to keep the space to be used as a doctor’s office, but one doctor isn’t enough to keep the clinical space open.

Morrison added the landlord is going to take a “significant hit” over the next few months, adding they are working to get one or two more doctors in the building.

He said he got in contact with Kate Monk of the Dr. William S. Monk Community Health Care Development Fund, who said she was “more than happy and excited to fund a bit of a bridge so that they could keep the space as a clinical space.”

Council then directed staff to work with the owner of 29 Main Street East to facilitate the contribution toward the retention of the office space.
