Tyler Gevaert has been awarded funding and an accelerated path to the Olympics after impressing scouts at the 9th-year RBC Training Ground national final.
The 16-year-old slalom kayaker from Huntsville was one of more than 2,500 athletes who participated in RBC Training Ground this year.
Sam Effah, RBC Marketing Manager, says only 100 athletes were invited to the final, held in Halifax on November 2, with Gevaert being one of them.
“From that top 100, we then choose the top 30 who will then get funded,” says Effah. “Basically, Tyler killed it. He turned the heads of national sports organizations.”
He says Gevaert was selected by the national sports organization Canoe Kayak Canada.
“It’s fierce every year. The more people find out about it, the more competitive it gets,” shares Effah.
He says Gevaert stood out because he had the speed, power, strength and endurance the experts were looking for.
“The next step is he’ll receive funding over two years, but then also he’ll be connected with some of the top coaches in the country, and essentially he’ll be on a path towards hopefully the Olympics,” adds Effah.
