Thousands of pounds of non-perishable food were donated during Project Porchlight Food Drive yesterday after being postponed for a week due to the weather.
People were outside waiting at the end of their driveway for volunteers, the OPP, EMS, Public Works, and Motorcyclists of Muskoka to go by with their lights and sirens to pick up the bags and boxes of non-perishable food donations.
Major Dwayne LeDrew, Corps Officer with The Salvation Army Huntsville, says even though they still don’t know how many pounds of food was collected, the project is “already a success.”
“We usually get around 40,000 pounds. By the way it’s going I think we’ll be close to that this year,” says LeDrew.
He says they have volunteer teams who will sort the food for the next couple of weeks, adding it will take a couple of weeks to get through everything.
“We date sorted as well as items sorted so that we use the oldest things first, as long as it’s still within the date range,” he says.
He says he is hoping the amount of food they have collected will last until July or August.
