The District of Muskoka says historic investments are being made in affordable housing.
Through this year’s budget, district council has committed increases of $1 million annually over the next two years to expand existing housing and homelessness initiatives.
Those are available for eligible builders, developers and homeowners to help boost supply of housing across the District.
One of the programs is for multi-residential rental units, which sees the district provide up to $100,000 per unit for new construction or conversions of existing buildings such as schools, churches, or retail spaces, into multi-unit housing.
The other will have the district provide $50,000 per unit to home or property owners to create secondary suite suites, like basement apartments.
District Chair Jeff Lehman says they’ve seen a huge interest in their Affordable Housing Initiatives Program, and are delighted to offer more grants this year.
