Snowmobile Safety Week runs next week.
Ahead of the annual safety campaign, the OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs are reminding riders that making each ride risk-free gives them the best chance making it through the season.
The OPP says over the past 10 seasons, 145 snowmobilers have lost their lives in its jurisdictions – citing excessive speed and alcohol impairment as leading causes, or contributing factors in fatalities. Police say close to 40 per cent of those fatalities occurred on frozen lakes and rivers.
Officials are encouraging riders to get up to date on what they need to keep themselves, their passengers and fellow riders safe all season long.
