Huntsville High Junior Girls Nordic Ski Team brings home gold from OFSAA

The junior girls Nordic ski team from Huntsville High School brought home gold from The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Nordic event over the weekend.

The event, which took place in Sudbury at Kivi Park, was a two-day competition and had 700 of the best skiers competing from across Ontario.

According to the coach for the Huntsville High Nordic Ski Team Ally Myers, it already started off impressively since they had a team of 20 student athletes who qualified for the OFSAA. The competition works off a point system in which even if a student does not place first, every point they collect during their individual competition counts toward the team.

“The higher, the faster you can go, the more points for your team. So, it is really a team sport even though you’re often competing individually,” explains Myers, adding the team had many top 20 finishes.

Myers reflects on one of the standout moments from the competition. “The standout moment was this relay win, where people watching the race were saying they haven’t seen a race that exciting in many years. That was a really strong team.”  she adds, “Emily Parry, our junior girl skier, got gold in the distance race, and she was also part of the relay team.”

For the next season, Myers says she hopes that the team will grow, and that the students’ enthusiasm and momentum continue.
