Local hockey team gets recognized with March 16 as Good Deeds Day

Mayor Terry Glover has officially proclaimed March 16 as Good Deeds Day in Lake of Bays.

During the March 11 council meeting, the mayor recognized the Huntsville Sting U13-Black hockey team for their “extraordinary commitment” to the community.

“Good Deeds Day is an opportunity to celebrate kindness and its ripple effect throughout our community,” says Glover. “The team’s incredible efforts have inspired us all, and I’m proud to honour their achievement by declaring March 16 as a day to recognize the power of doing good.”

The day comes in recognition of the team doing over 1,300 “selfless and impactful” good deeds a year ago as part of the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup competition. That was good enough for first place, and secured a $100,000 donation for their chosen charity, Food4Kids Muskoka.

Shilah Smith, U11 Black Team Manager says they wanted to participate again this year with a different group of girls.

“I don’t know that they quite fully understand how big it is. I mean, they are nine and 10 years old, but to them, it felt so good to just do things for other people and that’s really all they see it as,” says Smith.

She says they had lots of help from Trish Kruusmagi, Development Officer Events and Community Engagement with the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.

She adds thanks to her they got in touch with the community through Facebook and the radio, the Kitchen Food Table, Muskoka Living and others.

“It’s a lot of work, but it is a lot of fun,” says Smith.

Chevrolet says final submissions are still being counted. The winner will be announced on Hockey Night in Canada on March 22.
