Council approves new townhouses on Gouldie Street

Huntsville will soon see new townhouses built at 25 Gouldie Street.

During the March 12 Huntsville planning council meeting, M. Bilwani Holdings Inc. was granted permission to build a 67-unit block townhouse development.

According to the latest report presented at the meeting, the development consists of twelve two-storey townhouse blocks.

The report says each townhouse comes with exclusive rights to its front and rear yards, along with shared rights to a private road and outdoor amenity area.

The application was first brought to council in the Feb. 12 planning council meeting by Shazad Bilwani, president of the company, who says the project will bring “a lot more property tax to the town.”

“It’s going to bring a lot of business for the small business owners. I’ve talked to a bunch of them, whether it’s real estate agents, contractors, handymans, they’re all excited to hear that there’s going to be 67 new homes,” says Bilwani.

Initially, residents and councillors expressed concerns regarding the project’s compatibility with the low-density neighborhood, its potential traffic effects, and its proximity to the railway.

“This is another application that’s going to bring some changes to the existing neighbourhood, and as we know, the properties remain untouched for many years, so it’s going to be a big change for this area,” says Councillor Cory Clarke.

According to the report presented in March 12 an applicant-hosted Open House took place on Feb. 21, where public comments were received and addressed through studies.

“I actually, I’m very supportive of this project going forward,” says Nancy Alcock, Huntsville Mayor.

Council voted unanimously to approve the development project.
