U.S. Flag to remain at G8 Park

U.S. Flag will continue to fly at G8 Park despite community comments amid the on-going tariff war.

During yesterday’s (March 24) Huntsville council meeting, council discussed removing the U.S flag from the G8 Park the same way the Russian Flag was removed in 2022.

Nancy Alcock, Huntsville mayor, said the removal of the Russian flag was a different situation.

“Russia was actually kicked out of the G8,” said Alcock. “It made it a lot easier because they were no longer part of the G8, and that’s not the case with the American flag.”

Alcock said the G8 represents countries that work together collaboratively to solve their problems out.

“I understand the anger, the despair, the grief, all of the different feelings and emotions people are having around this. I get it,” said Alcock. “We have friends in the U.S. We know that they are going through despair and anger and a lot of the same emotions that we are.”

Councillor Monty Clouthier said what the U.S. president is doing is going to make Canada a stronger country by becoming more “self-sufficient.”

“We are gonna end up building our pipelines now,” said Clouthier. “A flag doesn’t represent the government of the country. It represents the people of the country.”

Councillor Cory Clarke said the current situation will shift the way the U.S. deals with Canada adding it could have long lasting implications.

“I don’t like the idea of altering historical displays in Huntsville,” said Clarke.

As a result, council unanimously decided to keep the flags as-is, emphasizing the importance of fostering unity at this critical time.
