Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for our area.
The weather agency says a ‘major ice storm’ will be landing this evening (March. 28) into Sunday afternoon, with the heaviest freezing rain expected overnight into Saturday morning.
They add this can lead to ice buildup to 25mm in Bracebridge and Gravenhurst areas, and up to 15mm around Huntsville.
Officials explain this may cause slippery road conditions, breaking branches and power outages.
Environment Canada says precipitation may begin as snow or rain before changing over to freezing rain tonight. Freezing rain may become lighter for a brief period of time for some areas on Saturday before changing to rain on Sunday as temperatures rise above the freezing mark.
Officials say to take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas and consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. – If you must go outside, be cautious of ice sheets and ice-covered branches or wires
* If you see downed or hanging power lines, let your power company or local police know
– Wear appropriate footwear with rubber soles and best traction
– Watch out for ice damming on your rooftop once the storm subsides
