Mayor Alcock says Huntsville staff, first responders helped ‘around the clock’

Huntsville Mayor Nancy Alcock says despite the town not getting hit as hard as its neighbours, municipal staff and utility crews were working all weekend “around the clock.”

“We saw actually a mix of snow and freezing rain, and we had significant buildup of ice on our road, sidewalks, and other surfaces,” says Alcock.

According to Alcock, the only power outage in Huntsville that affected a significant chunk of the municipality was only about 20 minutes.

“We’ve been kind of lucky,” she says. “It’s a great relief as a mayor.”

She also says first responders, the fire department and other emergency services offered to help the other towns hit by the storm.

“They’re all really tight, all of the [operations] crews and certainly emergency services. If there’s a need elsewhere and we can fill it, we certainly do that,” she says.

Alcock says she is thankful for all the crews, public workers, power service workers, emergency services, and everyone else who helped and stayed on top of the situation.

“We would continue to remain vigilant, and for those people in our community who need to reach out, continue to do that,” says Alcock.
