In support of World Autism Day, the Town of Huntsville raised the Autism Ontario flag today (April 2).
The event was held at the Civic Square with members of Autism Ontario and town representatives.
Carla O’Neill, supervisor for the North Central Indigenous Team with Autism Ontario says the day is an opportunity to celebrate the diversity and unique strengths within the autistic community.
“We are advocating for better support and improved services, promoting inclusion, self-determination and accessibility for autistic individuals,” says O’Neill.
She says the day also supports the Celebrate the Spectrum campaign.
Officials say the campaign encourages families, schools, communities, and organizations to mark World Autism Day by honoring autistic individuals and advocating for the removal of systemic barriers to create a more inclusive Ontario.
O’Neill adds Autism is a lifelong journey and this celebration helps to ensure every individual has the opportunity to be heard, valued and included in all aspects of our community.
Huntsville Mayor Nancy Alcock was also at the event and says the flag raising is a way to recognize and support all those working towards inclusivity and improving lives.
