House being called a “total loss” after fire

BRACEBRIDGE, ON – A Bracebridge family is proof that fire alarms save lives.

A house in Bracebridge is being called a writeoff by local fire officials. Michael Peake is the Bracebridge fire prevention officer.

He said the fire was first reported around noon on Saturday at a home on Ann Street. Peake added that three fire trucks responded after receiving multiple calls about a blaze at the house.

He said there were six to seven occupants in the basement watching a movie when the smoke alarm upstairs went off.

“So the mother went to check it out and that’s when she saw the fire,” Peake said. “So, thankfully for a working smoke alarm, they all got escaped without injury.”

Peake said the cause of the fire is still unknown, but it isn’t considered suspicious.

When asked what the damage was estimated at, Peake simply said: “I’d consider the house to be a total loss.”

The officer added that most of the fire was contained to the interior but a sizable hole was burned into the roof.
