Bracebridge sending holiday cheer to Norway

The Gol kommune, Norway Friendship Committee is asking residents to send pictures and videos of them celebrating the holidays.

Town officials are asking you to take a picture or video of you enjoying the holiday season in Bracebridge. They say to send the material to [email protected] by Monday, Dec. 18.

The submissions will be used to create a video that will be sent to the community, which has a population of close to 5,000, and on Bracebridge’s various social media accounts.

The Friendship Committee dates back to 2010 when a “friendship agreement” was signed between the towns to celebrate the relationship that goes back as far as World War II. Officials explain the Royal Canadian Air Force used the Muskoka Airport as an auxiliary base for Canadian Forces Base Borden. The facility was also used as a training facility for the Royal Norwegian Air Force. Officials say “hundreds” of Norwegians escaped to Canada to train before returning to fight in Europe.

The committee serves as an advisory committee on how to further the relationship between the two towns. In years past, officials from Bracebridge have visited Norway, while representatives from Gol have travelled to Cottage Country for short stays.
