Muskoka Lakes gives thumbs up to 14.3 percent tax hike

Mayor of Muskoka Lakes Peter Kelley says they’re “no different” than the other councils dealing with inflation.

Council approved a 14.3 percent tax increase Wednesday. It means per $100,000 assessment on your home, you will pay an extra $18.63 in taxes.

“The cost of infrastructure renewal is an issue that many councils are dealing with, and Muskoka Lakes is no different,” says Kelley. “This council is committed to ensuring the money is available to maintain safe and adequate roads, buildings, and recreational facilities for our residents. The value of these investments is central to what enables Muskoka Lakes to be a vibrant community.”

The budget includes $16,971,500 earmarked in the operating budget, which covers things like utilities and facility management while $9,323,200 is set aside for the capital portion of the budget.

The capital budget deals with projects the township plans on starting over the next decade.

In 2024, Mark Donaldson, Director of Financial Services, says some of the notable projects include the rehabilitation of the Burgess Dam in Bala, finishing the separate arena feasibility and fire location studies, reviewing the township’s zoning by-laws, and continued work on regulating short-term rental accommodations.
