Starting Jan. 1, 2024, all short-term rental accommodations (STR) in Bracebridge must be licensed to operate.
The license will cost $1,500 annually and will apply to new and existing STRs. The application can be filled out ahead of time through the town’s website.
Other fees may apply, like for property standards and fire-related inspections.
Town officials define an STR as “when all or part of a dwelling unit is used to provide sleeping accommodations for any rental period that is less than 28 consecutive days in exchange for payment,” but add that doesn’t include motels, hotels, or bed and breakfasts.
The program was approved in Oct. 2023 by town council.
Through it, a complaint system was established using a demerit point system to help by-law officers enforce the rules.
Michael Mayer, Chief By-Law Officer, told council during the Oct. meeting, that after 7 demerit points, the STR license may be suspended and after 15 it could be revoked.
Once the licensing program goes into effect in the New Year, anyone wanting to complain about a registered or unregistered STR should call 705-645-5264, ext. 3250 or email [email protected].
