A 66-year-old from Bracebridge is facing charges after they were spotted waving a rifle at vehicles along Hwy. 17 near Chippewa Falls, north of Sault Ste. Marie.
Provincial Const. Bev Gauthier with the Sault Ste. Marie OPP says officers were called just after 1 p.m. on Jan. 8.
She says when the officers got there, they spotted the suspect holding a firearm and “walking unsteadily in the middle of the highway” and, after ordering them to put down his weapon, arrested the individual.
The suspect has been charged with:
- Handling a firearm, weapon, prohibited device, or ammunition in a careless manner
- Careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device, or ammunition
- Unlawfully possessing a loaded firearm within eight metres of a road
- Being intoxicated in a public place
- Having liquor in an open container in an unauthorized place
A court date has been scheduled in Sault Ste. Marie for Feb. 5.
