Huntsville seeking artist proposals for Kent Park display

The Town of Huntsville is asking artists to submit their pitches for an art installation in Kent Park.

According to Jacqueline Surette, Manager of Recreation, Culture, and Heritage, they’ll look at artists’ experience, qualifications, and preliminary pitches or ideas. She notes there will be only one successful proposal with a budget of $50,000, whether that’s from a singular artist or a team.

“We’re looking for experience, your curriculum vitae or resumé, images of previous work, details on your artistic approach are things that we ask for,” says Surrette. “If you’re an artist team, if you’ve collaborated together before, those types of things. It’s kind of like submitting your resumé for a job interview.”

Surrette says they want to tailor the art piece to fit the public consultation the town did in 2022, with certain style and theme recommendations from the community.

“We’re an outdoor and creative community that has beautiful Muskoka landscape around us,” says Surrette. “Things like the essence of Muskoka, and the outdoors, our creative spirit. Functionality was something that was brought up by the community as well.”

Surrette says they’re hoping to unveil the finished display next spring, giving artists time to finalize the concept in the late summer and create it over the fall and winter.

Criteria and an application portal are at the town’s public engagement website. The deadline is May 26.
