The Huntsville Heritage Walking Tour will soon be its own app.
It’s thanks to a $2,500 dollar grant from Explore Huntsville the Huntsville and Area Historical Society received last week (July 24).
Officials say the Huntsville Heritage Walking Tour app (New app to offer a digitized historical tour of Huntsville – My Muskoka Now ) contains stops of historical interest in which people can use the GPS location services to get more information about places on the map. It currently can be downloaded through the Apple or Google Play stores through the STQRY app, though this funding will help eventually make it independent.
Katrina Cotterchio, historical society president, said this support will allow the volunteer-run society to have the app directly under their name.
“We applaud the Huntsville and Area Historical Society and its volunteers for the amazing work they did to help preserve and promote an appreciation for Huntsville’s built heritage,” said Kelly Haywood, executive director of Explore Huntsville / Huntsville Municipal Accommodation Tax Association. “Within its first month, the app already had more than 1,700 views.”
Officials say the historical society plans to involve local schools in the project by inviting students and teachers to volunteer to build on the project’s growth, as well as giving them a resource to help further their curriculum projects.
