The schedule for the 2024 Summer Paralympics has been released.
Bracebridge’s Mary Jibb will take part in four events:
- 100m freestyle on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 3:30 a.m. EST
- 100m backstroke on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 3:30 a.m. EST
- 100m butterfly on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 3:30 a.m. EST
- 200m individual medley on Friday, Sept. 6 at 3:30 a.m. EST
If the 17-year-old qualifies for the finals for any of the races, the medal round will be held the same day, but at a time when most people will likely be awake.
Not long after qualifying for the Paralympics, Jibb spoke with the MyMuskokaNow.com newsroom and said she may take part in a fifth race if she’s chosen for Canada’s relay squad.
The Town of Bracebridge has draped a banner wishing Jibb luck at the Paralympics across the Silver Bridge. Also, in early June, the Bracebridge Falls were illuminated in violet as part of the nation-wide “IGNITE the Lights Across Canada” campaign.
Jibb has trained with the Muskoka Aquatic Club since she started swimming. After suffering a stroke just before her sixth birthday, she explained she and her parents decided swimming was the best way her to rehabilitate.
The Paralympics are being held in Paris, France. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST on Aug. 28.
