Our area’s medical officer of health is retiring.
Dr. Charles Gardner, who is also the chief executive officer at the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, is retiring at the end of September.
The Health Unit says Gardner has served as medical officer of health since 2005, adding his career began with general medical practice in Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and Zimbabwe.
The Health Unit says among his many achievements, his leadership during large-scale health crises has been a defining aspect of his career. From pandemic influenza planning in 2006, to managing the H1N1 outbreak in 2009, and the most recent COVID-19 pandemic, officials say Gardner has consistently provided calm and strategic leadership.
