The Huntsville Library will soon be making borrowing easier.
Officials say starting March 18, fines and automatic renewals on certain items will be removed.
They add while fines were meant to encourage timely returns, they may discourage people from returning materials.
“We want everyone to access our library without worrying about late return fees. Overdue fines create barriers for those who need our services, especially those who may be marginalized or struggling,” say officials.
The library says most materials, including books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, books on CD and jigsaw puzzles, will be fine free and will have automatic renewals applied to them.
The library is asking their members to add an email to their library account so they receive notices.
“Your items will automatically renew on the due date, up to two times. We will email you to let you know if the renewal was successful or if someone else has a hold on your item,” officials say.
Items that will still be fined and with no automatic renewals are high-demand books, interlibrary loans, electronics and video games.
