The Centennial Centre in Gravenhurst will be closed this Saturday and Sunday as a precaution ahead of the forecasted rain, and the “extreme amount of snow” on the roof.
“We are taking this step out of an abundance of caution,” Infrastructure Services director Andrew Stacey said. “We had the roof inspected earlier this week and have determined that the snow load, combined with a heavy rainfall, could cause a structural integrity issue that would put public safety at risk. We could wind up with too much weight on the roof. As a result, we have made the decision to close the building for the weekend. We know this is a disruption, but we simply can’t take any chances.”
Officials say they’ll be keeping an eye on the facility over the weekend and are optimistic for the centre reopening on Monday (March 17).
Updates on the situation will be shared on the town’s website and social media channels on Monday.
