Seniors with dementia getting help from District program

People in Muskoka with Alzheimer’s disease have an ally at the District of Muskoka.

Wellness Initiatives for Seniors Engaged, or WISE Community Connect has been working hard over the last few months to help people with dementia in the area.

An information session at Milford Bay Community Connect led by Shawna Torkoff from the Alzheimer’s Society of Muskoka managed to clear up some misconceptions surrounding stigmatisms of dementia and tips on maintaining good brain health.

Following the presentation, Torkoff was challenged to try a busy board while wearing comfort mitts. It is a way of simulating the frustration seniors can feel while doing everyday tasks. The board has locks, and latches that challenge their fine motor skills while enhancing hand-eye coordination, finger dexterity, and increased muscle strength.

“The concept behind the muffs is that people with dementia like to have something to keep their hands occupied.”  shared Torkoff. “The muffs keep hands warm, and provide visual, tactile and sensory stimulation”.

The District of Muskoka’s Seniors Programs and Services help support the health and well-being, socialization, and community engagement for older adults 55+ in Muskoka.  Formerly known as WISE Clubhouse, Community Connect is a two-hour program offered once or twice a month at 20 locations across Muskoka.
