The O.P.P. is extending a warning to drivers that considering using flooded roads.
Bracebridge O.P.P. is encouraging people to take road closed signs seriously after having to rescue a driver that got stranded on a flooded road.
According to the O.P.P., a small car drove past the road closed sign on River Road and the car stalled out once the water reached the engine. Because the military personnel and the O.P.P. in the area were tied up, the car had to be pulled out by a tow truck.
After an investigation into the incident, it was revealed that the driver had a suspended licence. They were charged with driving on a closed road and driving with a suspended licence.
The police urge drivers to realize and remember that if a road is closed, it is closed for a reason. Flood waters can hide washed out sections of road, as well, fast-moving currents can carry a vehicle away. In either case, the O.P.P. say that can lead to a serious injury or loss of life.
Anyone caught driving on closed roads can face fines through the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, and they might be liable for any damages to their vehicle while driving on those roads.
